Life Lessons from Darla – Discussion Questions

  • What are the most significant blessings in your life?
  • What are the most important attributes of a best friend?
  • What gives you joy?
  • What do you fear in life?
  • What is your opinion about emotional support animals?
  • Have you seen the movie The Elephant Man? Did you like it? Why?
  • Do you relate to a particular character in the book? In what way?
  • With which parts of the book do you agree or disagree?
  • What have you learned from the book?
  • Did anything in the book make you want to learn more?
  • Which lessons in the book were new to you or helpful?
  • Was there anything in the book that surprised you?
  • Have you had situations in your life that are similar to those in the book?
  • Do you think having a challenge right now would make or break you?
  • What might lead you to become more compassionate?  More patient?
  • What might keep you from helping strangers? Fear?
  • What works of service do you perform for others?
  • Were you ever teased or bullied?  If so, how did this affect you?
  • What do you think about having a grade school class with the opportunity to try crutches, a wheelchair, a blindfold, etc.?
  • Do you know someone with a disability or difference? If so, how do you interact with this person?
  •  Are you afraid to talk with someone with an illness or disability?  Why?
    • If you have a disability, are you nervous about going out or trying new things?  Why? 
    • Have you seen or owned an animal with a difference? If so, how did others react to seeing the animal?
    • Have you had a dear one pass away? If so, how did you handle the situation? How have you dealt with this after time has passed?
    • In what way has this book changed your thoughts about death and dying?
    • In what ways has this book changed your perspectives on life?
    • What are you willing to do for a friend in need?
    • Do you think that respect for others is expanding or declining now? Explain why you answered the way you did.
    • What is your purpose in life?
    • Are you able to ask for help or give help as needed? Why or why not?
    • Do you spend most of your time thinking about the past, the present, or the future? Do you attempt to remain mindful of the present? How is this working for you?
    • Is your focus on the physical aspects of a person or on a person’s personality/soul?
    • How do you stay positive in difficult circumstances?
    • Who do you appreciate and why?
    • Have you had an illness or accident that caused you to become dependent on other people?  If so, how did this make you feel?
    • Is there a special person who inspires you?  How and why?
    • If you have seen the Grand Canyon in pictures or in person, what is your impression?
